The United States has launched fresh airstrikes in Somalia, targeting the al-Qaeda-linked militant group al-Shabaab as part of its ongoing counterterrorism operations.
According to the US Africa Command (AFRICOM), the latest strikes occurred on October 17 and 19, 2026, near Dhooble Airport in southern Somalia and the Cal Madow Mountains in the north. Both operations were conducted in coordination with the Somali government.
The strikes aim to weaken al-Shabaab, an extremist organisation responsible for deadly bombings, assassinations and attacks against civilians and security forces. The US maintains that its operations are necessary to protect American interests and support Somalia’s fight against terrorism.
This military campaign is not new. US airstrikes in Somalia began in 2007, nearly two decades ago, and have intensified significantly under President Donald Trump’s administration. AFRICOM recorded 84 strikes between January and September 2026 alone.
Somali authorities report that US-backed military operations have helped reclaim territories previously controlled by al-Shabaab and destroy militant facilities. However, the campaign has also raised concerns about civilian casualties and displacement. Families interviewed by Al Jazeera reported losing relatives, homes and livelihoods during previous military operations. The US military disputes responsibility for some of these incidents.
The casualties from the latest October strikes remain undisclosed. Despite years of military intervention, al-Shabaab remains active, raising questions about whether continued airstrikes alone can bring lasting peace and stability to Somalia.
