Nigeria Confirms First Case of Ebola as Deadly Outbreak Spreads Across Africa

On October 20, 2026, Nigerian health authorities confirmed that a woman who travelled from Uganda tested positive for the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola in Abuja.
The patient reportedly developed symptoms on October 7 and sought treatment at a private hospital on October 11. She is currently receiving medical care in isolation, while authorities investigate where she contracted the virus.
The current outbreak was declared in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on May 15, 2026, and has since spread internationally. The outbreak has affected four African countries: DR Congo, Uganda, Kenya and now Nigeria. France has also recorded an imported case.
The DRC remains the hardest-hit country, with over 9,500 confirmed infections and 4,600 deaths. Uganda recorded 20 confirmed cases before declaring its outbreak over in August, while Kenya has reported nine cases, including one death.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has activated its emergency response system to prevent further transmission. So far, 44 people who had contact with the infected patient have been identified and placed under monitoring.
Hospitals nationwide have also been instructed to strengthen surveillance, promptly isolate suspected cases and implement strict infection prevention measures. The World Health Organization is supporting Nigeria’s response through contact tracing, investigations and the provision of protective equipment.
The outbreak has become a major continental health concern, spreading across Central, East and West Africa. In response, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention has announced an emergency meeting of African health ministers for October 28, 2026, to coordinate containment efforts.
With no approved vaccine or specific treatment for the Bundibugyo strain, early detection, supportive medical care and prevention remain critical.
