On July 30, 2026, tens of thousands of migrants attempted to cross from Morocco into Ceuta, Spain’s North African enclave, in one of the territory’s biggest border crises in years.
Spanish authorities estimated that around 72,000 people entered Ceuta, while Moroccan officials put the figure closer to 40,000. Many crossed by swimming around border barriers or using flotation devices.
The surge was fuelled by economic hardship, youth unemployment, misinformation and social-media posts suggesting that Spain’s border controls had weakened. Videos of migrants reaching Ceuta spread rapidly, encouraging more people to attempt the crossing.
Spain deployed about 200 police officers and 60 troops, while Moroccan security forces moved to stop further crossings. Spain later installed a 500-metre floating maritime barrier and began coordinating returns with Morocco.
By early August, Spain said roughly 70,000 of the 72,000 arrivals had returned to Morocco. More than 1,300 unaccompanied minors were registered and required separate protection and accommodation arrangements.
The crossing turned deadly. Spanish authorities reported at least 72 deaths, although Moroccan authorities reported a lower figure. Many deaths were linked to drowning and the chaotic conditions surrounding the crossing.
The incident has renewed debate over border security, irregular migration and the conditions driving people to risk their lives to reach Europe.
