Africa Weighs In on the Iran–Israel Crisis

by Chinazor Ikedimma on Jun 23, 2025

The long‑simmering tensions between Iran and Israel have exploded into Iranian drone and missile attacks on Israel, and deepening Israeli and U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites. As the crisis unfolds, African leaders are weighing in, trying to make sense of the chaos and calling for restraint before the conflict spins out of control.

Africa knows a thing or two about the devastating cost of war, and its leaders are choosing their words  and moments carefully. In a chorus of calls for peace, nations across the continent have responded with urgency and conviction.

The Nigerian government is urging both Israel and Iran to hit the brakes. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs called for restraint, reminding both sides that “escalation only serves to deepen the tragedy and intensify the suffering of civilians.” Nigeria is making it clear: it’s dialogue or disaster.

Kenya didn’t mince words. President William Ruto called Iran’s missile strikes an “act of aggression,” warning that such moves could drag the Middle East and possibly the world to the “brink of catastrophe.” Yet Kenya also called on Israel to hold its fire, reminding both nations that peace only comes when one side chooses restraint.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, a veteran of complex negotiations, spoke from experience. He called for “utmost restraint” from both Israel and Iran, warning that the escalating tensions could spiral into a “catastrophic” regional war. South Africa is making it clear: the Middle East needs a roadmap out of crisis, and Pretoria is offering its voice for peace.

Senegal came out swinging, condemning Israel’s airstrikes on Iran and making an urgent call for an immediate ceasefire. Dakar’s message was simple: this cycle of retaliation and aggression doesn’t just kill civilians, it kills the chance for peace.

Somalia, a nation long scarred by conflict, called for global powers to halt the bloodshed and seek dialogue. Meanwhile, Guinea‑Bissau expressed deep concern for the rising tensions and called for both parties to respect international law and protect the lives of ordinary people.

While individual nations have spoken out, the African Union has kept its voice measured and neutral, a reflection of its role as a consensus‑seeking body. The AU continues to advocate for dialogue, restraint, and respect for international law. Its message to the world is clear: more war is not the answer.

As the world teeters on the edge of a larger crisis, African leaders aren’t just bystanders. They’re reminding us all that peace is fragile, costly, and worth fighting for with words, not weapons.
