Has the EU Rejected Nigeria’s Invitation to Observe the 2027 Elections?

Reports that the European Union has rejected Nigeria’s invitation to observe the 2027 general elections have generated considerable attention and, understandably, concern. But the claim is misleading.

On August 10, 2026, reports circulated suggesting that the European Union had declined an invitation from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to participate in the 2027 elections. Some of the reports attributed the supposed decision to Nigeria’s worsening security situation and the alleged hostile treatment of EU observers following the publication of the EU’s report on the 2023 elections.

The European Union has now explicitly denied those reports, describing them as inaccurate and speculative. According to the EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, INEC did send the EU a formal invitation dated April 17, 2026. The EU says it responded to that invitation and will deploy an Electoral Expert Mission comprising two to four independent experts for the 2027 elections.

The EU’s involvement is not about deciding who governs Nigeria. It is part of its support for democratic governance, credible elections and strong institutions.

Nigeria has invited international election observers for years, and the EU has observed previous elections, including those in 2015, 2019 and 2023. Its observers assess the electoral process, document their findings and make recommendations for improvement.

The EU also has a significant relationship with Nigeria because of the country’s political, economic and regional importance. As Africa’s most populous country and a major actor in West Africa, Nigeria’s political stability has implications beyond its borders.

Ultimately, the EU observes; Nigerians decide. The responsibility for conducting a credible election remains with Nigeria and its institutions, particularly INEC.
