Protests Erupt in Kenya After Blogger Dies in Police Custody

by Chinazor Ikedimma on Jun 21, 2025

Kenya is grappling with yet another wave of anger and heartbreak following the death of a blogger in police custody. The latest wave of unrest began after the death of Albert Ojwang, a 31‑year‑old teacher and blogger, who passed away just two days after being arrested in the town of Homa Bay in western Kenya. Ojwang had been detained allegedly for criticising Eliud Lagat, the country’s Deputy Police Chief, and died under mysterious circumstances while in police custody. In the wake of public outcry, authorities announced the arrest of a police officer in connection with Ojwang’s death, but that has done little to assuage the growing anger across the nation.

The situation worsened when, amid ongoing protests for justice, Kenyan police shot an apparent bystander at close range. The graphic scene circulated online, triggering fresh demands for accountability and intensifying the protests. Crowds have taken to the streets across Homa Bay, Nairobi, and other towns, carrying placards and chanting slogans, calling for an end to extrajudicial killings and a wholesale overhaul of policing practices.

Kenya has long struggled with police misconduct and extrajudicial killings. Human rights organisations have repeatedly condemned the use of brutal force by security forces, citing instances where activists, students, and ordinary citizens have been injured or killed while expressing their right to free speech. In this context, Ojwang’s death has become a symbol of a deeper crisis — a crisis that has long tested the trust between Kenyan citizens and the institutions meant to protect them.

In Kenya, the call for accountability has grown too loud to be ignored. The protests that have erupted across the nation are a reflection of the collective pain and resilience of a people determined to secure a future where every citizen can speak, live, and protest without fearing for their life.
