Navi Pillay: The Only African to be Awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize

South African human rights lawyer Navi Pillay has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. She is the only African among the Nobel laureates announced in the 2026 prize cycle, joining a long list of Africans whose achievements have earned global recognition.

At 85, Navanethem “Navi” Pillay has spent decades fighting discrimination and defending human rights. Born in Durban, South Africa, in 1941, she grew up under apartheid, a system built on racial segregation and oppression. In 1967, she became the first woman to establish a law practice in Natal Province. She defended anti-apartheid activists and went on to build an extraordinary career in international law.

Pillay stands for human rights, equality, justice and accountability. Her work has focused on ensuring that those responsible for serious crimes are held accountable, regardless of their position or influence. As a judge at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, she contributed to landmark legal developments recognising rape as a potential act of genocide. Her work helped strengthen international efforts to prosecute sexual violence and protect victims.

Pillay’s accomplishments include becoming the first Black woman appointed to South Africa’s High Court in 1995, serving as a judge and president of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, and becoming the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014. She has also played significant roles in international investigations and legal proceedings involving alleged human rights violations, including those concerning Gaza and the Rohingya people of Myanmar. Her career has consistently centred on a fundamental principle: no one should be above the law.

For Africa, her achievement is another reminder that the continent contributes far more to the world than its natural resources. Africans have helped shape international law, influence global institutions and advance the pursuit of justice.
