Morocco Appoints First Woman Prime Minister After Historic Election

On September 29, 2026, King Mohammed VI appointed Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri as head of government, just days after Morocco’s parliamentary elections on September 23. Her Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) won the largest number of seats, taking 97 of the 395 seats in parliament.

At 50, El Mansouri is no stranger to Moroccan politics. Born in Marrakech in 1976, she studied law at the University of Montpellier in France and later earned a degree in Anglo-American business law in New York. She began her political career locally and in 2009 became the first woman to serve as mayor of Marrakech. She later served as a member of parliament before becoming Minister of National Territorial Planning, Urban Planning, Housing and City Policy in 2021.

Her appointment is particularly significant in a country where women remain underrepresented in political leadership. El Mansouri herself described the moment as historic and said it was a source of pride for Moroccan women.

Many Moroccans have welcomed the appointment. Local television interviews found women expressing excitement about finally seeing a woman lead the government, while others said she deserved a chance to prove herself. Some citizens, however, remain skeptical, questioning whether a woman can effectively lead within Morocco’s traditionally male-dominated political system.

The appointment also comes at a challenging time. El Mansouri must now form a coalition government, address concerns over jobs and living costs, and oversee major preparations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup. With voter turnout falling to about 38%, she also faces the difficult task of restoring confidence among young Moroccans.
