Kenya Says Karibu!: No Visa, No eTA Needed for Most African and Caribbean Travelers

by Chinazor Ikedimma on Jul 25, 2025

In a bold and historic move, Kenya has officially removed visa and electronic travel authorization (eTA) requirements for citizens of all African countries (with the exceptions of Libya and Somalia) and most Caribbean nations. This policy, which allows travelers to simply arrive and enter without filling out forms or seeking online approvals, marks a major shift in how the East African nation views continental unity and international cooperation.

Under this new policy, visitors can stay in Kenya for up to two months, while citizens from countries in the East African Community (EAC) can enjoy stays of up to six months. For African and Caribbean travelers, this development means greater ease of movement, fewer travel barriers, and a significant reduction in costs and delays previously associated with acquiring travel documents.

The Kenyan government has framed this decision as more than just a travel update. It’s a statement of intent, a call for greater regional integration, economic collaboration, and a more united Africa. The removal of visa restrictions aligns with the ideals of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and ongoing conversations around Pan-Africanism, mobility, and empowerment.

By eliminating bureaucratic red tape, Kenya positions itself as not only a tourism hotspot but also a gateway to new opportunities in trade, investment, education, and cultural exchange. It’s a move that resonates deeply across the continent, especially at a time when visa restrictions have long frustrated African travelers who often face more hurdles visiting neighboring countries than Western tourists do.

This announcement is already generating positive reactions on social media, with many praising Kenya for walking the talk on African unity. It also sets a precedent that other African nations may soon follow, accelerating the push for open borders and intra-African collaboration.

As Kenya says “Karibu” (welcome) to her African and Caribbean brothers and sisters, the future of travel on the continent looks just a little more hopeful, and a lot more connected.

Quick Notes

- The visa-free policy does not apply to travelers from Libya and Somalia (due to security concerns).

- Always check with your local Kenyan embassy or airline for the most current entry conditions before flying.

- You may still be required to show proof of return flight, accommodation, or sufficient funds so travel smart.
