China Announces Plans for First Museum of African History and Culture
by Chinazor Ikedimma on Sep 26, 2025
China has announced plans to establish its first national museum dedicated to African history and culture. The project was disclosed by Ye Hailin, Director of the China-Africa Institute at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, during a workshop on China-Africa cooperation held in Beijing.
According to officials, the museum will serve as a national-level institution showcasing Africa’s diverse civilizations, traditions, and artistic heritage. The initiative is intended to strengthen cultural ties between China and Africa while offering Chinese audiences greater access to African history and culture.
The project, however, is still in its early stages. Authorities have not yet specified the exact location of the museum or set a timeline for its opening. Details on how collections will be sourced and whether African institutions will play a role in curating exhibits have also not been disclosed.
The announcement comes as part of a strategy to expand China-Africa collaboration beyond trade and infrastructure to include cultural and academic exchange. In addition to the museum, China has pledged to establish five China-Africa research centres, one of which is planned for South Africa.
Reaction to the news has been mixed. Supporters describe the plan as an important step toward deepening mutual understanding and promoting African culture internationally. Others have raised questions about the sourcing of artifacts and the extent of African involvement in the project’s design and execution.
For now, the museum remains a proposal under development, with further details expected in the coming months.
