At just 19 years old, Yan Diomandé has already made African football history.
Born in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, in 2006, Diomandé has risen remarkably quickly from a promising youngster in the United States to one of European football’s hottest prospects.
His breakthrough came after joining Spanish side Leganés in 2024. Just a year later, he moved to RB Leipzig, where he exploded onto the Bundesliga scene during the 2025/26 season, scoring 12 goals and providing eight assists in 33 league appearances. He was subsequently named Bundesliga Rookie of the Season.
His performances attracted the attention of Europe’s biggest clubs, but it was Real Madrid that won the race.
On August 6, 2026, Madrid agreed to sign Diomandé from Leipzig on a seven-year contract running until 2033. The deal is reportedly worth €125 million guaranteed, with bonuses potentially taking it to €140 million. That fee makes him the most expensive African footballer in history.
The teenager has also established himself internationally, representing Côte d’Ivoire and earning 14 caps and three goals by July 2026.
Before Diomandé, the title belonged to fellow Ivorian Nicolas Pépé. In 2019, Arsenal paid €80 millionto sign the winger from French club Lille, making him Africa’s most expensive footballer at the time.
Seven years later, Diomandé has taken the record back to Côte d’Ivoire, but at a dramatically higher price.
From Pépé to Diomandé, Côte d’Ivoire now has two generations of players who have rewritten the value of African football on the global transfer market.
