Egypt has welcomed home 48 ancient artifacts after the United States returned them during a repatriation ceremony in Los Angeles on August 21, 2026.
The artifacts, handed over by the FBI to Egyptian government representatives, include jewelry, statues, sculptures, amulets, funerary objects and ancient inscriptions. They date from three major periods of Egyptian history: the Pharaonic, Roman and Coptic eras.
The return followed an FBI investigation that determined the objects had been illegally trafficked out of Egypt. The suspected original smuggler has since died, but the investigation remains open as authorities work to identify possible accomplices and recover other illegally obtained artifacts. The FBI said the latest possessor of the collection contacted authorities after researching the artifacts and discovering concerns about how they had entered the United States. Investigators subsequently found no evidence that the objects had been lawfully removed from Egypt.
The repatriation is part of US-Egyptian cooperation against the illicit trafficking of cultural property. The two countries established a cultural-property agreement in 2016 that provides a framework for identifying, seizing and returning Egyptian antiquities illegally brought into the United States. US authorities say more than 5,000 archaeological and cultural artifacts have been returned to Egypt over the past decade.
