TV Show Promoting Wildlife Conservation Among Nigerians Premieres

Wild Africa, a 13-part weekly wildlife television series, premieres on Channels Television on August 15, 2026, bringing stories of Africa’s wildlife and the people protecting it to Nigerian audiences. The series airs Saturdays at 5:30 p.m. WAT on DStv, with additional repeat broadcasts.

Produced in Cape Town by Wild Africa, with support from the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) and the Tammy Estrada Strome Foundation, the programme is hosted by Nigerian wildlife veterinarian Dr Mark Ofua, South African ocean advocate Zandile Ndhlovu, and Zimbabwean presenter Rumbie Takawira. It also features African celebrities including Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Djimon Hounsou, Laycon and Aproko Doctor.

At the centre of the project is a simple goal: make conservation relatable to ordinary Africans and inspire people to protect the wildlife and ecosystems that belong to the continent.

Several Nigerian conservation stories will feature across the series. These include sea turtle rescue efforts, the protection of forest elephants, manatee conservation, forest protection and efforts to save the pangolin, the world’s most trafficked mammal. The production has highlighted locations including Omo Forest in Ogun State, where conservationists and communities are working to protect forest elephants, and Lekki Lagoon, where Dr Bolaji Dunsin has worked with communities to protect African manatees. The programme also explores conservation efforts involving Nigeria’s endangered wildlife more broadly.

Nigeria’s Cross River region is also significant to the wider conservation story, particularly because it is home to the critically endangered Cross River gorilla, which survives along the Nigeria-Cameroon border. Nigeria has an extraordinary biodiversity story, but it is also facing a conservation crisis. The country’s elephant population has fallen dramatically, while illegal wildlife trafficking has made Nigeria an important transit point for ivory and pangolin scales.

Wild Africa hopes that by putting Nigerian conservationists, rangers, scientists and communities on television, audiences will begin to see wildlife as part of Nigeria’s heritage and economy rather than something distant from everyday life.

The series’ producer and Wild Africa CEO, Peter Knights OBE, argues that wildlife protection is also an economic issue because nature and wildlife support tourism, jobs and local economies. Dr Mark Ofua similarly wants young Nigerians to understand that wildlife is part of their heritage and that they have a role in protecting it.

The Nigerian premiere is part of a wider continental rollout, with the series already airing in Zimbabwe and Namibia and scheduled for South Africa, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Botswana and Zambia.
