Niger’s latest mutiny reveals Russia’s deep influence in the Sahel

On August 29, mutinous soldiers attacked a military base near Niamey’s international airport and attempted to seize control of strategic locations. Nigerien forces, backed by Russia’s Africa Corps, eventually regained control after nearly 24 hours of fighting.

The incident is significant because Russia was not simply helping Niger fight jihadist insurgents, it was helping the military government defend itself from an internal rebellion.

As countries such as Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso have distanced themselves from France and other Western powers, Moscow has stepped in with weapons, military training and security personnel. The region also offers access to valuable resources, including gold and uranium, while giving Russia a stronger position in its wider competition with the West.

The mutiny soldiers’ primary concerns appear to be Niger’s worsening security situation and conditions within the military. Despite the junta’s promise to improve security after taking power in 2023, jihadist violence continues to threaten the country, while Nigerien soldiers continue to suffer heavy losses.

The mutiny therefore raises a difficult question for Russia: Can its growing military presence actually make the Sahel more secure, or will it mainly help military governments stay in power?

For now, Russia’s intervention has strengthened its position in Niger. But if insecurity and dissatisfaction within the military continue, Moscow’s growing role may face an even bigger test.
