Dangote Refinery IPO Launches: Africa’s Biggest Share Sale Is Now Open

by Chinazor Ikedimma on Sep 15, 2026

The Dangote Refinery has officially opened its doors to public investors. On September 14, 2026, Aliko Dangote launched what is being described as Africa’s largest-ever IPO, offering 4.1 billion new shares at ₦525 each. The offer could raise about ₦2.15 trillion ($1.6 billion) if fully subscribed.

The IPO was launched on the Main Board of the Nigerian Exchange (NGX), making it one of the biggest events in Nigeria’s capital market. The refinery is currently being offered through the Nigerian market, rather than simultaneously listing its shares on foreign exchanges. However, Dangote has said the refinery could pursue a U.S. secondary listing within three to four years, meaning international investors could eventually have another route into the company.

The IPO is targeting both ordinary Nigerians and institutional investors. Among the major institutional backers is Pan-African Refinery Investment SPV, which has provided a $400 million underwriting commitment. The broader financing programme has also attracted international institutional interest, including sovereign wealth and development-finance investors. But the real focus is retail investors. With a minimum subscription of just 10 shares, costing ₦5,250, Dangote is calling it an “IPO for the people.” And the response has been strong. Investment platforms reported heavy demand, with some experiencing traffic that temporarily overwhelmed their systems.

The IPO has attracted considerable attention outside Nigeria because of the size of the refinery and its potential growth. International investors can participate through licensed Nigerian brokers or investment platforms that provide compliant access to the Nigerian Exchange. Diaspora Nigerians and foreign investors are being targeted through platforms that work with SEC-licensed Nigerian brokers. The attraction is obvious: this is a refinery processing about 700,000 barrels of crude per day, with plans to eventually double capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day. But international investors are also looking carefully at the refinery’s nearly $49 billion valuation, which some analysts consider ambitious.

The IPO has dramatically increased the market value placed on Dangote’s refinery stake. Forbes estimated Dangote’s net worth at about $51.3 billion on September 14, while other projections suggest his fortune could rise to around $58 billion if the IPO is fully successful.

The subscription window runs from September 14 to October 13, 2026. The shares are priced at ₦525 ($0.38) each, with investors able to start with 10 shares. So Nigerians, members of the diaspora and eligible international investors have roughly a month to decide whether they want a piece of Africa’s biggest refinery.
